The world is full of so much bad news, don’t you think? I mean, with all the terror attacks in London, and the like, it’s difficult not to be overwhelmed by the negative vibes pervading the world today. Turn on the news and you have breaking news coming out ever so often. Combine it with a stressful day at work and you have a classic setting for pessimism and depression.  That is why effective stress management strategies are so paramount to the success of every individual.

Most of the world’s greatest achievers, including pastors, athletes, entrepreneurs, and the like, would not have gotten to the peak of their height without learning effective stress management strategies. They developed the psychological ability to manifest a mental cool, on demand. And this composure has enabled them to handle pressure without breaking down.

Stress is a part of life that cannot be totally eradicated. However, you can reduce the negative impact of stress on your health and relationships.  Learning to manage stress, and respond with a positive attitude, is a great way to grow yourself and strengthen your mental prowess. That is why positive thinking and optimism are crucial parts of effective stress management.

Therefore, it is important that we learn how to maintain a positive attitude, one with optimism, when dealing with stress.

Stress management and optimism

STRESS MANAGEMENTHave you ever heard the age-old question of the half-full cup?

“is your cup half-full, or half-empty?”

Now it is important to note that, with respect to the question above, both choices are correct in their own in their own respect. The cup is both half-full and half-empty at the same time.

You can choose to whine, and feel sad, that you have only half-glass of drink left. Or you can choose to fell fortunate, and be grateful, that you still have half a glassful of drink left. They are both correct. However, the positive and optimistic approach has advantages over the negative attitude in many ways.

In real life, also, the optimistic person has so much more advantage over the pessimist, when placed in a similar situation.

For one, optimism opens the mind to possible, and creative, opportunities. The optimist is willing to think outside the box and, in most cases, come up with solutions that a pessimist would have otherwise discarded. As Bo Bennett rightly puts it

“having a positive mental attitude is asking how something can be done rather than saying it can’t be done.”

Optimism enables you to be mentally prepared to handle the situation, and effectively reduce stress impact, much more quickly than pessimism. In other words, optimism is more likely to get you out of the pit. Pessimism, on the other hand, is likely to increase your stress, and prevent you from seeing the creative solution you so need.

The Optimist in a stressful situation

STRESS MANAGEMENTThe optimist is someone who focuses on positivity and positive thinking. He does not allow a disappointing, or discouraging, situation keep him down for long. Rather, he sees every disaster/problem as a challenge to surmount, and an opportunity to learn something new. He knows how to manage stress and reduce the negative effects of stress, by shedding some positive light on the problem. This makes it look more surmountable and less stressful.

Optimism, however, is not denial of reality. The optimist is not somebody who sticks his head in the sand, just to avoid some unpleasant situations in life. Emphatically no. The optimist is a realist who tackles the situation with a positive attitude. This is one of the simple ways to reduce stress and increase productivity in a stressful situation.

Furthermore, since your thought and emotions determine your actions, optimism helps you become more constructive in life. This helps you in stress management, and in achieving your set goals.
