I HAVE BEEN THINKING A LOT ABOUT MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE LEFT A LEGACY BEHIND FOR THE WORLD TO FOLLOW. THESE PEOPLE DID MORE THAN THE AVERAGE SAMARITAN COULD DO. THEY LITERARY SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES FOR THE WORLD TO LIVE, THOUGH SOME OF THEM PAID THE ULTIMATE PRICE.  EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM HAVE BATTLED WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF STRESS AND FORMULATED THEIR OWN STRESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS. SOME STRESS STRATEGIES WORKED, BUT SOME WORKED AGAINST THEM.

TODAY, WE ARE LOOKING AT THE LIFE OF ONE OF SUCH MEN, AND HOW HE ENCOUNTERED STRESS IN HIS LIFE.

EVERYBODY HAS HEARD OF DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. OK, THAT WAS AN EXAGGERATION BUT YOU GET WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY.  HE WAS A GLOBAL ICON, IN THE FIELDS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENTS

DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR BRIEF BIO

BORN ON JANUARY 15 1929 IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, MICHEAL KING JR. WAS THE SECOND OF THREE CHILDREN. HIS FATHER, MICHEAL KING SR, WAS A SECOND-GENERATION MINSTER WHO, AFTER A 1934 TRIP TO GERMANY, TO ATTEND THE FIFTH BAPTIST WORLD ALLIANCE CONGRESS IN BERLIN, DECIDED TO BE CALLED MARTIN LUTHER KING. THIS WAS IN HONOR OF THE GERMAN REFORMER MARTIN LUTHER.  HE ALSO CHANGED HIS SONS NAME.

AS A YOUNG BOY, MARTIN LUTHER KING JR ATTENDED SEGREGATED PUBLIC SCHOOLS. KING WAS VERY SMART FOR HIS AGE. HE ADVANCED RAPIDLY THROUGH CLASSES, SKIPPING BOTH 9 AND 12 GRADES, AND GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL AT THE AGE OF 15. HE RECEIVED THE B.A DEGREE IN 1948, AT THE AGE OF 19, FROM MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, A DISTINGUISHED NEGRO INSTITUTION OF ATLANTA. IN 1951, HE RECEIVED A B.D IN THEOLOGY FROM CROZER THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY, AND A P.H.D FROM BOSTON UNIVERSITY IN 1955.

MARTIN LUTHER KING UNDER STRESS

FROM A YOUNG AGE, MLK HAD SHOWN PROMISE TO BE THE POLE BEARER FOR HIS GENERATION. BY THE AGE OF 26, HE WAS THE LEADER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENTS. HE PIONEERED THE FIRST GREAT NEGRO NONVIOLENT DEMONSTRATION OF CONTEMPORARY TIMES, THE MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT OF 1955, THAT LASTED FOR 382 DAYS. DURING THAT PERIOD, HE WAS ARRESTED, SUBJECTED TO PERSONAL ABUSE, HIS HOME WAS BOMBED, AND HE WAS ASSAILED BY NUMEROUS DEATH THREATS ON A DAILY BASIS. HIS ROLE IN THE DEMONSTRATION EXPOSED HIM, AND HIS FAMILY, TO A LOT OF TROUBLES, STRESS, AND WORRIES THAT FEW PEOPLE HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE.

FROM THE DAY HE ACCEPTED THE LEADERSHIP OF THE BOYCOTT, HIS LIFE BECAME FILLED WITH DANGER. EVERY SINGLE DAY HE WAS ABOUT, HE WAS A LIVING TARGET WAITING TO BE HIT.  HE KNEW IT, YET STILL MOVED FORWARD. AS THE DAYS INCREASED, THE TENSION HEIGHTENED. IT GOT SO BAD THAT, ON JANUARY 27TH 1956, JUST ABOUT 8 WEEKS INTO TO BOYCOTT HE WAS CLOSE TO HIS BREAKING POINT.

IT WAS AFTER A PARTICULARLY DISTURBING DEATH THREAT THAT HE CAME TO GOD IN PRAYER. AND THE LORD ENCOURAGED HIM TO PUSH ON. AND THAT WAS WHAT HE DID.

EFFECT OF STRESS ON THE BODY

MARTIN LUTHER KING AND STRESSBY 1968, DR KING HAD TRAVELED OVER SIX MILLION MILES AND SPOKEN OVER 2,500 TIMES. WHEN HE TRAVELED, HE WOULD GIVE MULTIPLE SPEECHES, AND SERMONS, DAILY.

BUT IT CAME WITH A PRICE. TOWARDS THE LATER PART OF HIS YEARS, THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF THE STRESS BEGAN TO SHOW ON HIS BODY. DR KING WAS WEARING OUT. HE NOW SUFFERED REPEATED BOUTS OF EXHAUSTION THAT LEFT HIM  HOSPITALIZED FOR SOME PERIODS OF TIME

A LITTLE REFLECTION

I NEVER REALLY REALIZED HOW MUCH STRESS DR KING WENT THROUGH, TILL I ACTUALLY DID A LITTLE RESEARCH INTO HIS LIFE. NORMALLY, WHEN I THOUGHT OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR, I HAD THE IMAGE OF A BRAVE NEGRO WARLORD WHO SINGLE-HANDEDLY TOOK DOWN THE UNJUST SEGREGATION LAWS, AMONG MANY OTHERS. I HAD THE IMAGE OF A SUPER BREED WHO FELT NO PAIN, HAD NO NEED, NEVER FEARED, AND ALWAYS WAS IN CONTROL.

I GUESS THAT WAS THE IMAGE A LOT OF PEOPLE HAD OF HIM, WHICH WAS UNDERSTANDABLE CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT HE WAS THE FIGURE HEAD OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.

BUT, I DISCOVERED THAT HE WAS JUST LIKE ANY OF THE AMERICANS IN HIS GENERATION. HE HAD HIS OWN SHARE OF FEARS, WORRIES, FAILURES AND STRESS. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIM AND MOST PEOPLE WAS THE FACT HE CHOSE STAND IN THE FRONT LINE OF BATTLE, SWALLOW HIS FEARS, CLOSE HIS EYES TO THE BULLETS WHIZZING PAST HIS HEAD, AND LEAD THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE.

BUT BELIEVE ME, IT IS NOT A JOB YOU WANT. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A DECENT PAYING JOB, THAT HAS SOME PERKS ATTACHED TO IT AND IS STRESS-FREE, TRY SOMEWHERE ELSE.

DR KING WAS A MODEL OF HUMILITY AND SELFLESSNESS. HE WAS CONSTRAINED INTO A LIFE WHERE HE COULD NOT SEEM TO BENEFIT FROM HIS FAME AND POSITION, OTHERWISE THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT COULD FAIL. THE SUCCESS OF THE MOVEMENT WAS SO CRITICAL THAT HE HAD TO GIVE AWAY HIS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARD MONEY. HE WAS A MODEL OF SACRIFICE WHO DEMONSTRATED IN MORE THAT WORDS.

I WAS NEVER THERE TO APPRECIATE HIS EFFORTS. BUT THE LEGACY THAT DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR HAS LEFT BEHIND HAS IMPACTED THIS WORLD.
